Westport upset animals are returning to farm

WESTPORT – Animals are being reintroduced to a tenant farm where police and animal-control officers in July removed more than 1,000 animals living in deplorable, unsanitary conditions, The Herald News reported last month.

Some residents have responded by urging town officials to shut down the farm.

After receiving information about animals back at the farm, police found a calf on the property, said Westport Police Detective Jeffrey Majewski, adding the tenant farmer said he intended to bring more animals there.

Majewski said police can’t stop the property owner from bringing animals there. Town administrator Timothy J. King said the Board of Selectmen also has no authority to restrict animals from the farm.

Majewski said the Building Department sent a letter to property owner Richard Medeiros, demanding 75 unsafe and illegal buildings on the property be demolished.

“The town moving forward with those issues is the only way to prevent … bringing animals back into very unsafe and unsanitary conditions,” he said. •
