What would you like to see at the Shooters waterfront site in Providence’s Fox Point?

As the Interstate 195 relocation project winds down, some of the area between the highway and Narragansett Bay in the Fox Point neighborhood will stop being a construction staging area. As a result, there has been much public discussion about what to do with the land, specifically the parcel that the state took over that included the former Shooters nightclub.

The state has said that it is required to maximize the value of the land as it relinquishes use of the lot, meaning that it might auction it to the highest bidder, which could be a residential or commercial developer.

But neighborhood advocates would like the head of the Bay to become a resource that all people would have access to, and thus would like to see it developed as public space, whether for more open space or as an outdoor entertainment venue. They are also not enamored of the idea of a high-rise condominium blocking the view of the Bay for those homes in Fox Point north of the highway.

In a city that sits at the head of Narragansett Bay, yet has much of its waterfront occupied by commercial and industrial interests, should the state make sure that the reclaimed section of Fox Point is a public resource?

I am a concerned citizen of Rhode Island and I believe that the Head of the Bay advocating for the old Shooters Night Club property should be turned into a public recreation/entertainment space open to everyone. The tax payers have a right to enjoy our waterfront.

Public use of this particular piece of land for recreation and open space with amenities is important not only for the direct enjoyment of the people of Providence. It would be a critical part of the strategy to make Providence more economicallycompetitive. Providence has a unique quality of life tha still has a way to go for fulfillment. The more attractive Providence is, the more competitive it will become economically. And "atractive" does not mean simply beautification, but an environment that gives pleasure due fo the activities and natural environment it offers. This location should be the jewel iin the crown because it is the head of the bay and water has been shown to be among the most attractiver for adjacent economic development. Providence's overall private sector will be a deeper, broader and more enduring winner if the land is used publicly, than if itis exploited by a single developer.

My name is Zachary Weindel, I was born and raised in Rhode Island on a historical farm in Potowomut. My Idea and opinion of the shooters plot is it should be reserved for a small one or two exhibit public museum that is passive solar wind powered sustainable and dedicated to art and science inspired by the biological and geological world.

Why not an aquarium? Seems like a perfect fit: highlight our proximity to the water at a site that's on the water.

I'd like to see something like Boston's Hatch Shell. I also like the idea of an aquarium.

An aquarium is an EXCELLENT idea. Mystic has one, Boston has one.. Why don't we? It's a great location for one as well, right next to beautiful India Point Park, direct access and visibility from the interstate.
