Where Lovecraft lives on

The city that gave the world H.P. Lovecraft now has a store featuring his works and connecting visitors to his Providence.

Lovecraft Arts & Sciences opened earlier this summer at the Arcade Providence. It is run by the nonprofit Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Council, which produces the biannual NecronomiCon Providence Conference.

The international conference and festival was held Aug. 20-23. The store was envisioned as a physical space tied to the conference, said Niels Hobbs, director of the council. But he hopes literary tourists and other fans will support the store as a year-round destination.

It includes Lovecraft works and guides to related sites in New England, Hobbs said.

Lovecraft was an active writer from the 1910s to 1930s, Hobbs said, and became known posthumously for creating “weird fiction,” combining science fiction, fantasy and horror. •
