At Barnum Financial Group, every employee has work goals, but the company knows they have other priorities as well.
“We’re a very family-oriented place,” said Lynn Waldvogel, chief marketing officer. “You have the flexibility to go to your child’s ball game or recital. We do work hard, but being there for your family is always accommodated.”
Barnum, a financial services firm owned by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., is headquartered in Shelton, Conn., but also has 63 employees working in Warwick. At all its offices, Barnum fosters a culture that recognizes the importance of both family and community.
Workers plan fun events throughout the year – bowling tournaments, softball games, dress-down Fridays – that raise money to help their neighbors. In Rhode Island, for example, employees pitch in to help the company’s annual bicycle give-away for kids who might miss out otherwise. And the Warwick office sponsors a Little League team, with employees serving players refreshments during games.
Financial rewards are satisfying as well. The company pays 75 to 99 percent of medical coverage, prescription coverage, dental coverage, life insurance premiums and short-term disability insurance premiums. Financial advisers can earn monetary bonuses, as well as family trips to Disney World, tropical resorts and other fun destinations. There’s also an incentive plan for non-sales staff to recognize and reward performance.
The company seeks to promote from within and help employees advance their careers. “We have periodic reviews and coaching, so you know where you stand,” said Waldvogel. “This is a performance-driven place, but not sink or swim.” &#8226
