TODAY MARKS THE END of the "Wickford Wintertime Wednesdays" promotion that ran for the past five weeks and offered South County commuters free roundtrip rail service to Providence from Wickford Junction station on Wednesdays.
PROVIDENCE – Although it is the final week of the “Wickford Wintertime Wednesdays” promotion that offered commuters free commuter rail service from Wickford to Providence, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and the R.I. Department of Transportation are reminding commuters that free parking at Wickford Junction will continue until the end of March.
The Wickford Wednesdays promotion ran for the past five weeks with free rail service for South County commuters.
Today is the last day of the promotion, and interested riders who pick up a ticket before 3:30 p.m. will receive both a ticket to Providence and a return ticket to be used on any train back to Wickford Junction this evening.
“As the economy begins to recover and more residents get back to work, the delays along major roadways like Interstate 95 and Route 4 will grow,” RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis said in prepared remarks. “The commuter rail is a great option for motorists who regularly travel these highways to avoid the traffic and get to work or school in a cost-effective manner.”
Although the Wintertime Wednesdays promotion comes to a close today, RIDOT will continue to offer its free wintertime parking at both Wickford and T.F. Green Station at the InterLink in Warwick. This offer runs through the end of March.
Normally, parking at T.F. Green costs $6.75 each day and parking at Wickford Junction costs $4 daily. RIDOT reminds commuters that the T.F. Green station charges a surcharge of $30 for parking more than 24 hours. This fee will not be waived as part of the wintertime free parking.
Fares from Warwick and Wickford to Providence are $3 and $3.25, respectively, each way. Fares to and from these stations to Boston’s South Station cost $10.50 and $11, respectively. Full schedule and fare information can be found on RIDOT’s website at www.dot.ri.gov
