NORTH PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Classic games, fundraising Wiffle ball tournament, raised nearly $16,000 for SLAMDiabetes, a nonprofit that works to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes through sports, entertainment and education, and raise funds for camp scholarships for children who have T1D and research efforts.

The tournament was held Aug. 11 in North Providence.

“The Rhode Island Classic was a huge success,” said Jeff Kolok, founder of SLAMDiabetes, in a statement. “Everyone had a great time and we raised a significant amount of money that is going to help make life easier for kids suffering with T1D.”

North Providence Mayor Charles A. Lombardi threw out the ceremonial first pitch and proclaimed Aug. 11 SLAMDiabetes Day in town.

Paws, the mascot of the Pawtucket Red Sox, also made an appearance.

The Rhode Island Classic was the fourth SLAMDiabetes tournament of the summer. The 2013 tournament season will begin in February with events scheduled in cities from Florida to Vermont.
