PROVIDENCE – With the deadline to file personal income tax returns just two days away, the state Tax Administrator David M. Sullivan advises residents that the best way to file is electronically.
That way, residents can have their tax refund deposited directly into their bank or credit union account.
“E-filing saves time and money, and results in fewer errors and faster processing,” Assistant Tax Administrator Neena S. Savage said in a statement. “You cannot have direct deposit if you file your Rhode Island return on paper.”

State Tax Administrator David M. Sullivan said that returns must be e-filed or postmarked on or before April 15. That date also is the deadline for paying what is owed for tax year 2014.

He said that of all the returns that will be filed this year, approximately two-thirds have already arrived, most electronically. He said he expects a “surge of returns to be filed by the deadline.”

“There’s always a big rush,” Sullivan said.

The average refund so far this season is $521, compared with $549 at about the same point last filing season.
