Women & Infants recognized as a ‘top hospital’

PROVIDENCE – Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island has been named a “top hospital” by The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization.
Women & Infants, a Care New England Hospital, was one of 94 hospitals recognized in the United States. This is its first time on the list, which recognizes hospitals for excellence in hospital safety and quality.
The Leapfrog Hospital award is given to less than 7 percent of all eligible hospitals; the annual awards were presented at Leapfrog’s annual meeting and Top Hospital awards Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
“We are so proud of this honor and to be recognized among some of the best hospitals in our country,” Mark R. Marcantano, president and chief operating officer, Women & Infants Hospital, said in a statement. “This designation as a top hospital by The Leapfrog Group is a recognition of our organization’s continuous focus on improving the safety and the quality of the care that we provide to the women and newborns of our region.”
Said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, “By achieving Top Hospital status, Women & Infants Hospital has proven itself to be a premier institution and deserves to be recognized for its dedication to the families and patients in Rhode Island and surrounding areas.”
The selection was based on results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures established to prevent errors.
Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing qualifications for the award, including rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors.
Morton Hospital in Taunton also made the list.
