PROVIDENCE – The Women’s Center of Rhode Island on Friday will dissolve as an organization, and its programs and services will merge into Crossroads Rhode Island where they will be known as the Domestic Violence Program of Crossroads Rhode Island.

The nonprofit will be governed by Crossroads’ Board of Directors. The board of directors of each organization unanimously agreed to the merger.

“This merger represents the coming together of two organizations united in the common goal of empowering vulnerable individuals and families to overcome homelessness and live safe, self-sufficient lives free of violence,” Virginia Branch, Women’s Center of Rhode Island board chair and Crossroads Rhode Island board member, said in a statement.

The Domestic Violence Program of Crossroads Rhode Island will continue to provide confidential programs and services for individuals and families in crisis, including a 24/7 hotline, domestic violence shelter, case management, community education, outreach, supportive transitional housing and permanent housing, according to information released about the merger from the organizations.
According to a memo about the change, with this merger, Crossroads “intends to improve the quality and accessibility of services to survivors of domestic violence and expand the range of services that support clients as they transition to safety, housing and stability.”
Crossroads, founded in 1894, is the largest homeless services organization in the state.
Another memo about the change said the merger is the culmination of a three-year affiliation between the two organizations.
“As one organization, we will more effectively provide integrated services to address the unique needs of domestic violence survivors,” stated Virginia Branch, president of the board of directors of the Women’s Center, and Karen A. Santilli, president and CEO of Crossroads.
Through the merger, Crossroads Rhode Island will become an active participant in statewide advocacy and awareness campaigns, as an affiliate member of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
The Women’s Center of Rhode Island was one of the founding member agencies of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence in 1979.
