Woonsocket on track for new train service

WOONSOCKET – Plans for a new commuter railroad that will connect the city to Worcester in the north and Providence in the south are moving forward, with longtime tenants at One Depot Square relocating to make room for Boston Surface Railway Co. headquarters.

Blackstone Heritage Corridor Inc., an organization that has been located in the city since the 1990s, announced recently that it will be moving to the Linwood Mill in Whitinsville, Mass., according to The Valley Breeze.

The news is the latest sign that a plan by railway Executive Director Vincent Bono is gaining momentum, as the group evacuates to make room for the company’s home, already listed as Woonsocket on its website. •

  1. If McCoy Stadium was made a part of the new Blackstone River Valley National Park, federal funds would become available to improve the infrastructure in the National Park and around McCoy stadium. The National Park would need a reliable mass transit system to service the new National Park. The Providence & Worcester (P&W) rail right of way from Worcester to the George Washington Bridge in East Providence parallels all the points of interest in the National Park. If this P&W right of way was improved and electrified, a shuttle train system could be built to service the National Park. This P&W right of way passes within 1200 feet of McCoy Stadium’s parking lot. National Park tourists would guarantee that the PawSox would always play to capacity crowds. What more could Larry Lucchino want. Private funds would become available to build hotels and other needed amenities.
