WOONSOCKET – The city hopes to repurpose a historic former office building that supported the now-razed Lafayette Worsted Mill complex. The city is requesting proposals from developers for the sale and renovation of the building, which includes 12,000 square feet of land and room for up to 17 parking spaces.
The site, at 150 Hamlet Ave., was acquired by the city in 2009 as part of an agreement with the former mill owners, according to Blake Collins, a spokesman for the city.
The former Lafayette Worsted company office was built in 1900 and remains intact architecturally, according to the city’s description of the property. The building is constructed of brick and masonry and has a slate mansard roof.
The parcel is adjacent to the Woonsocket Hamlet Middle School and is zoned for light industry, which reflects the original mill development that occupied the area. The city will consider rezoning to allow commercial or office uses.
The building includes 9,300 square feet of interior space on two levels and a partial basement. Tours are available to prospective developers. Proposals to remake the site are due to the city’s Department of Planning and Development by 2 p.m. Sept. 30.
