Worrell makes advisers list

Jamie Worrell, founder and president of GPS Investment Advisors, has been named to the 2015 Financial Times Top 401 Retirement Plan Advisors list. Worrell has been consistently recognized for his work, including being named one of the Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers by 401kWire and 2011 Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year by PlanSponsor Magazine. Outside of his business, Worrell serves as a Rhode Island Commodore, as well as a board and committee member at several local nonprofit organizations. He holds a B.A. from Connecticut College and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School.

What are some of the biggest obstacles for clients when they are planning their financial futures?

The biggest obstacles they face are lack of time, expertise and clarity about what to do. Our work as advisers to corporate retirement-plan committees brings us into contact with many employees of those companies during enrollment and education meetings.

How have you utilized your Spanish fluency in your consulting practice?

Several of our corporate retirement plan clients have Spanish [or Portuguese]-speaking employees and have asked us to do meetings in that language. I’m able to meet and speak with our clients’ employees who feel more comfortable speaking in Spanish. When we can communicate about something as complicated as a 401(k) in someone’s native language, it is much more comfortable for them.

Have retirement planning/investment strategies changed over the years?

To start, many companies are now adding the Roth 401(k) as an option in their plans. This has many benefits worth considering. In addition, there has been a surge in companies automatically enrolling employees in the company 401(k) or 403(b), and/or automatically increasing employees’ savings rates annually. … We’ve seen increased interest in employee-stock option plans – Harpoon Brewery added an ESOP in 2014 – and nonqualified deferred compensation plans. •
