PROVIDENCE – Roger Williams Park Zoo has won the Quarter Century Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, in the company of 118 other facilities across the country.
Since 1974, AZA has been the primary accrediting body for top zoos and aquariums in the United States.
Established in 2015, this new award acknowledges facilities that have maintained AZA accreditation continuously for 25 years or more. The award highlights RWP Zoo’s commitment to animal care, conservation, education and more.
RWP Zoo has been accredited by the AZA since 1986, and is among 119 awardees in this inaugural group that have successfully achieved AZA accreditation well beyond the 25-year mark.
“AZA is dedicated to ensuring that the highest standards in the zoological profession are met, and this means that the accreditation process is therefore quite rigorous,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. “The fact that these aquariums and zoos have maintained continuous AZA accreditation for 25 years or more is an extraordinary achievement that deserves to be celebrated.”
AZA-accredited facilities have completed a thorough review to ensure that they meet and will continue to meet rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education and safety. Zoos and aquariums must successfully complete the accreditation process every five years in order to be members. RWP Zoo is currently working through this process, as its accreditation expires in 2016.
“I believe improvements we’ve made over the past five years and our plans for the future will show AZA experts our commitment to providing the best care for our animals, and maintaining our award-winning conservation and education programs per their standards,” said Jeremy Goodman, the zoo’s executive director.
