Bryant to offer data science degree program

SMITHFIELD – Bryant University will launch a Bachelor of Science in Data Science degree program this fall to prepare students to become highly skilled analysts.

“Leading organizations depend on turning large volumes of data into information that aids strategic decision making,” Professor Richard Glass, chair of Bryant’s Information Systems and Analytics Department, and co-director of the Advanced Applied Analytics Center, said in prepared remarks. “Bryant’s Bachelor of Science in Data Science program prepares students to gain cutting-edge skills that help organizations achieve their strategic goals.”

Bryant, in a news release, said the program will help meet the growing need for data scientists, and also meet the demands of a 21st-century workforce.

The university cited a December McKinsey Global Institute Report that said the demand for data scientists is outpacing supply.

The estimated starting salary range for data science professionals is $65,000 to $85,000; data scientists can be found working at Google, CVS, Amazon and in law enforcement, according to Bryant.

The program will integrate statistics, applied analytics, information technology, machine learning, and big data processing to provide an interdisciplinary learning experience that simulates the real world.

Data science courses will be featured, and students also will be able to take courses in artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity and coding. According to Bryant, students will learn critical communication, finance and management skills enabling them to effectively solve problems and advance in their organizations.

Students also will complete a capstone project where they are immersed in developing real-world solutions for a regional company.

In addition to a Bachelor of Science in Data Science, students will earn an SAS/Bryant Certificate in analytics.
