The Omni Hotel Providence and several other sponsors recently helped the American Lung Association to raise a record-breaking $191,000 this year in its sixth annual Fight for Air Climb in Providence.
Toby Shepherd will join the Rhode Island Foundation as a grant programs officer effective May 5. Shepherd will lead the foundation’s grant-making in the education sector, serving as the lead on educational issues, working with stakeholders and evaluating funding proposals.
The University of Rhode Island broke ground Wednesday morning on a new LGBTQ Center on Upper College Road scheduled to open next spring. The groundbreaking took place at the site of the old Ruggles House, a vacant URI building at 19 Upper College Road that will be demolished to make way for the $2.1 million, 4,300-square-foot facility.
A 2014 Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour set for April 27 will benefit St. Michael’s Country Day School and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.
Among the highlights of the tour is a stunning entry hall with spiral staircase at the Bellevue House; a drawing room re-imagined as a kitchen and great room at the Commodore House with a painted trompe l’oeil ceiling; and an array of daffodils and gardens at Hillside.
