While most large employers don’t intend to change their health-insurance plans with the opening of the health-benefits exchange Oct. 1, small businesses struggling with the affordability are trying to understand what their options will be on the new exchange.

Imagine this: You are the CEO of ABC Co. headquartered in Providence. You have 700 employees (if you include dependents, that is about 1,500 human beings) who depend on you for their health care coverage. There is no other benefit that even approaches the importance of health insurance for them.
UnitedHealth Group Inc., the biggest U.S. health insurer, reported third-quarter sales below analysts’ expectations while declining to raise its profit projections, driving shares down the most in six months.
So HealthSource RI is up and running. At least comparatively speaking, it seems quite successful at this early stage, too, managing encouragingly high traffic, facilitating registration, and even enrolling new subscribers. In the first week of operation, the site enrolled about as many new subscribers as neighboring Connecticut, which draws from a much larger population. It would seem that Director Christine Ferguson and her small but intrepid staff deserve at least preliminary kudos for the frenetic effort needed to get the massive project off the ground on time.
