To the Editor: In response to your recent article (“Bill to create national park unit in Blackstone River Valley clears House committee,” Sept. 22, 2014), the National Parks Conservation Association greatly welcomes the opportunity to add the historic Blackstone River Valley into the National Park System for all Americans to experience and enjoy. more
Imagine a company that allows its employees to take nothing in salary this year in exchange for promissory notes to pay them twice as much in 10 years. Although there would be no immediate cash outlay, the company would still be required to accrue expenses reflecting the promises. more
A truly Big Brother would line everybody up, make them roll up their sleeves, and vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate against the flu. A simple, if draconian, solution to a draconian virus. more
The revelation that many plans in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s health-insurance exchanges have high deductibles has put many of the law’s conservative opponents into a corner: Once in favor of high deductibles, these critics of Obamacare are suddenly worried about the risk to consumers. The data show why their new position makes more sense. more
To the Editor: Recently, CVS Caremark Corp. solidified its standing as a health care business devoted to the well-being of its customers above all else by ending the sale of tobacco products in its stores (“CVS to end sale of tobacco products in stores by Oct. 1,” Feb. 5, 2014). more
To the Editor: My dealer is very concerned about the current direction Rhode Island is heading with regards to marijuana legalization. If legalization moves forward, he could see his income shrink even more. more

Our family fell in love with Rhode Island in 2004 when we moved from Virginia to take a job at the Naval War College in Newport. It was nice to be back in New England – my wife and I were both born and raised in Massachusetts. more

The stage is now set for a battle that will end in the court’s second major Obamacare decision later this year. more
Regulators rightly want to remedy a serious flaw in the financial system: The complexity of bank capital requirements has made them vulnerable to manipulation. In the rush to embrace simplicity, however, policymakers could inadvertently make safe investments unattractive for banks. more
