PROVIDENCE – As part of the eighth annual summer food drive, The Miriam Hospital employees recently collected more than 2,200 lbs. of nonperishable food items, from jars of peanut butter to boxes of pasta to canned vegetables, for three area organizations: the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, St. Raymond’s Church in Providence and Camp Street Ministries.

Veterans bike from Providence to Hartford Sept. 11 in the UnitedHealthcare Ride 2 Recovery Minuteman Challenge. The nonprofit event is a six-day, 330-mile ride from Boston to New York City. Ride 2 Recovery supports physical and psychological rehabilitation programs for injured veterans, featuring cycling as its core activity. Veterans use hand cycles, recumbent vehicles, tandems and traditional bikes. This is the third year that UnitedHealthcare is serving as Ride 2 Recovery’s presenting sponsor.

Runners in the 2012 CVS Caremark Downtown 5K hit the streets in Providence Sept. 16. More than 4,400 people participated in the main 5K race while 1,350 children took part in youth races. Along with a host of elite and competitive athletes, recreational runners, wheelchair competitors and walkers joined children to fill out the field. Last year the race raised $75,000 for local charities, bringing the total to that point during CVS Caremark’s 13-year sponsorship to $1.3 million.
