The University of Rhode Island recently honored professor of microbiology Paul Cohen with a place in the college’s Environment and Life Sciences Hall of Fame, along with a newly established scholarship in his name to support graduate students studying cell and molecular biology. The Paul Cohen Graduate Mentorship Fund will not only help support students with an interest in Cohen’s field, but will also underscore the importance of mentorship in the sciences – an area Cohen has been successfully nurturing throughout his long career at the university. more
Leonard R. Bradley Jr. was recently appointed by Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee to the R.I. Code Consistency Council, which is tasked with examining the fire, building, elevator and other related state codes for consistency. The council is expected to present its findings and recommendations to the Senate housing and municipal government committee by March 31. more
Laura Dauphinais, a Realtor at Century 21 Gonsalves-Pastore Realty, has been recognized with Rhode Island Housing’s Realtor of the Quarter Award for assisting homebuyers with Rhode Island Housing’s FirstHomes mortgages. This is the third time Dauphinais has been acknowledged for her efforts to connect homebuyers with the Rhode Island Housing Loan Center, which specializes in providing mortgages and key services to homebuyers. more
Dr. Robert Leonard, chief surgeon and founder of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, was recently accepted into the first class of fellows at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, where he is founding secretary and past president. Comprised of 61 surgeons, Leonard and his peers are distinguished as top professionals in the hair-restoration industry. more
Catherine Sama, professor of Italian and film media and head of the Italian section at the University of Rhode Island, recently won a National Endowment for the Humanities Research Fellowship. She plans to create the first fully annotated translation of European painter Rosalba Carriera’s correspondence for a book series dedicated to women writers from the 14th to 18th centuries. more
Andrea Rusnock, a history professor at the University of Rhode Island, recently won an American Council for Learned Societies Fellowship, which helps scholars devote themselves full time to research and writing for scholarly projects. She plans to complete a book on the new history of the smallpox vaccination. more
Sheryl Bezak Guglielmo was recently honored with the 2013 President’s Award for Distinguished Service from the American Planning Association’s Rhode Island chapter. Guglielmo, who has been a chapter member for the past five years, helps plan events and lends her graphic and Web-design skills to the organization’s newsletter and website. more
