Collaboration between Autism Project, Chuck E. Cheese’s benefits individuals on autism spectrum

WARWICK – On the first Sunday of every month, the Chuck E. Cheese’s in Warwick offers individuals of any age with an autism spectrum disorder a welcoming environment. On those Sundays, from 9–11 a.m., the venue opens its doors to individuals with an ASD or related developmental disability and their families; lights and sounds are toned down and animatronic characters – including Chuck E. Cheese’s – are turned off, according to a Lifespan statement.

Two years ago, Steven Spillane, general manager of Chuck E. Cheese’s in Warwick, contacted Alicia Ead, a parent resource specialist at The Autism Project, part of Lifespan, about providing sensory-friendly hours for individuals affected by an ASD and their families. April is Autism Awareness Month, and the first Chuck E. Cheese’s “Sensory Sensitive Sunday” was held in April 2015. Sensory Sensitive Sunday has expanded to include other Chuck E. Cheese’s locations in New England.

“This event is great for all ages, including adults with an ASD,” Ead said in a Lifespan statement. “It’s also a terrific event for those with social anxiety and sensory integration challenges.” She added that Sensory Sensitive Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to relax together – siblings are welcome – and for parents and caregivers to meet and make new connections and friendships. “Parents and caregivers can come here and rest assured that they will meet families who understand both their challenges and their triumphs.”

Families aren’t the only ones who make connections on Sensory Sensitive Sundays, reported Lifespan. Spillane and his team have grown to know many families attending these events and are responsive to making needed accommodations. “At our very first event, one child made it to the door but not inside. The second time, the child made it inside but didn’t stay long. The third time, the child came and stayed. It put such a smile on my face to see that progress,” Spillane said in a statement. “It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to give back.”
