PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Black Business Association is hosting a free, public forum for gubernatorial candidates focusing on economic equity, security and opportunities on July 29.

The forum is slated for 6 p.m. at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 475 Cranston St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Marion Orr, professor of Political Science and Urban Studies at Brown University, will serve as moderator.

Participating candidates for the seat held by Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee include Republicans Ken Block and Allan Fung, and Democrats Todd Giroux, Clay Pell, Gina Raimondo and Angel Taveras.

“The purpose of this forum is to provide candidates for governor an opportunity to address policy

issues vital to our community and the state’s future; and also help voters make informed decisions when they cast their ballots in upcoming state’s elections,” said Lisa Ranglin, president of the association.

Primaries are scheduled for Sept. 9. Election Day is Nov. 4.

Other organizations working on setting up the forum are the NAACP Providence Branch, Higher Ground International, NCBW 100, RI Young Professionals, Oasis International, OIC of Rhode Island, African Alliance of Rhode Island and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

The forum host and partners do not endorse, support or oppose any political candidates or parties, said Ranglin.

Questions on the topics of economic equity, security and opportunities can be submitted for consideration before July 21 by 5 p.m. by writing to events@ri-bba.com.
