PROVIDENCE – Five percent hotel tax collections rose 3.6 percent in the fiscal year over fiscal year period through October, but fell 2 percent when comparing the month of October with October 2015, the R.I. Department of Revenue said Thursday.

Five percent hotel tax collections grew to $9.9 million in the first four months of the fiscal year, compared with $9.6 million in the prior fiscal period. That includes $122,874 of receipts from room rentals via hosting platforms and online travel companies compared with $47,157 in the year-ago fiscal period.

Money from the tax is distributed to regional tourism districts, municipalities, R.I. Commerce Corp. and the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau. Regional tourism districts received the most money during the fiscal period at $4.2 million, a 3.4 percent increase.

In October, the 5 percent hotel tax generated $1.78 million in revenue, less than $1.79 million generated in October 2015. October state hotel tax collections include $6,489 of receipts from room rentals via hosting platforms and online travel companies compared with $4,020 in October 2015.
