PAWTUCKET – Goodbye wheelbarrow, boot and thimble, hello T-Rex, rubber ducky and penguin.

Hasbro Inc. said Friday that the fan votes are in from the Monopoly Token Madness vote, and the wheelbarrow, boot and thimble are out of the next generation of the Monopoly game.

The toymaker made the announcement in advance of World Monopoly Day on March 19. The eight tokens that will be in the next Monopoly game are the Scottie dog, top hat, car, battleship, cat, T-rex, rubber ducky and penguin.

The token madness vote was held Jan. 10-31 and fans from more than 100 countries weighed in on their favorite tokens from a list of 64 options. More than 4.3 million votes were cast.

The scottie dog, referred to as the “best friend” of Mr. Monopoly since the 1950s, received the most votes, making it the overall first place winner.

The T-Rex, the first dinosaur in the history of the game, received the second-most votes, followed by the top hat (a staple in the game since 1935), car, rubber ducky, cat (in the game since 2013), penguin and battleship.

The rubber ducky and penguin are new additions, in addition to the T-Rex.

“The global Monopoly community has spoken!” Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming, said in a statement. “The next generation of tokens clearly represents the interests of our fans around the world, and we’re proud to have our iconic game impacted by the people that feel most passionate about playing it.”

Hasbro said that brands and organizations even got into the act by campaigning for select tokens. The car-sharing service Zipcar campaigned to keep the car token in the game by tweeting memes to fans asking them to #SaveTheCar. The New England Aquarium rallied fans of their penguins to #VotePenguin, and also hosted Mr. Monopoly to meet the penguins on the day the vote kicked off, which was broadcast via Facebook Live.

It was known last month that the longtime Thimble would not make the final cut.
Fortune.com reported that the thimble was out of the running. The thimble was added to the game in 1935, representing a household object that was a part of everyday life in the 1930s when the current version of the board game was first published.

The next generation of the game will be available for purchase beginning this fall.
