Government Innovation League launches

PROVIDENCE – The state’s Office of Innovation recently launched the inaugural Government Innovation League.
Referred to as a “first-in-the-nation, state-employee innovation-training program,” the innovation league is a nine-month program in which teams of innovators from agencies across the state will spend 20 percent of their time with the Office of Innovation.
The goal is to teach them new tools and new approaches from leaders across the public and private sector so they can share innovative ideas and work together to solve cross-agency problems. Leaders will be able to work with colleagues outside of their own individual agencies.

“With the launch of the Innovation League, we are creating a culture of innovation across our state agencies and looking to new approaches to solving tough problems and engaging with Rhode Islanders,” R.I. Chief Innovation Officer Richard Culatta said in a statement.

R.I. Department of Labor and Training Director Scott Jensen said the Innovation League is “critical” to achieving the DLT’s mission of preparing Rhode Islanders for the jobs that pay, “particularly as we face a host of new challenges in meeting the training and employment needs of Rhode Islanders in the rapidly changing 21st century economy.”
“As we look to create innovative solutions to these challenges, like Real Jobs RI and unemployment insurance, we need to invest in our staff so that they are prepared with the skills and tools they need to serve our Rhode Islander residents effectively,” Jensen said.

Members come from the following state agencies, in addition to DLT: Department of Administration, Department of Education, Department of Environmental Management, Department of Health, Division of Information Technology, Department of Transportation and Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner.

“As we rethink the role of government in a digital age, we are building a sustained culture of innovation in our state agencies by creating a network of co-innovators who are willing to take risks with new ideas and be ambassadors for nontraditional approaches across Rhode Island,” Kevin Parker, director of government innovation for the R.I. Office of Innovation, said in a statement.
