PROVIDENCE – An aspiring entrepreneur has launched a campaign to crowdfund an “athleisure streetwear” company in Providence, designed to promote civic pride while also supporting the local startup community.
Alyssa Gill, founder of Hometeam, is a fellow at Venture for America, a Brown University-related program that connects recent graduates with startups throughout the country. She’s currently raising funds as part of the 2017 Venture for America Innovation Fund, an annual crowdfunding competition for fellows to validate their new business ideas. There are no other fellows looking to launch in Providence, Gill said.
Gill’s idea, Hometeam, is to rally people behind the “Providence” brand by selling clothes emblazoned with city-related words and themes. The theory is to sell the brand on athletic gear that’s strong enough to wear to the gym but comfortable and stylish enough to wear out. She calls it athleisure streetwear.
Gill says 10 percent of all future sales will go directly to Social Enterprise Greenhouse, a Providence-based business accelerator she says aligns with her approach to entrepreneurship. The accelerator helps grow startups looking to make positive social and economic impacts.
Gill has launched an Indiegogo.com campaign with the goal of raising $5,000 by Friday, March 31. As of Wednesday, she had raised $2,393.
If successful, Gill said, she’d look to grow in Providence and expand the business model into other cities throughout the country.
