PROVIDENCE – Two new hotels proposed for the city were approved by the Providence City Plan Commission on Tuesday night.

The commission discussed the 91-room Holiday Inn Express and Suites, which is slated for 371 Pine St., beside the service road that runs parallel to Interstate 95, and next to Crossroads Rhode Island. The applicant for the five-story hotel structure is Hotel Associates LLC.

The commission also reviewed the preliminary plan, featuring an amended design, for the 76-room Best Western Glo hotel, at 322 Washington St., from developer Jay Patel, of Weymouth, Mass.-based Sarchi Group.

Robert Azar, the city’s deputy director of planning, wrote in an email that both projects will have to file final paperwork with the Planning Department, after which they can apply for building permits.

“Usually there’s a lag between final approval and filing of permits because they need to complete architectural and engineering plans,” Azar wrote, adding “it’s conceivable that they both could be in construction this year.”

Contacted by phone, Patel said he does not have a timetable for his project, which will be designed to be mid-priced, and aimed at millennials and business travelers. The six-story hotel would be developed over an existing parking lot, across from the Providence Public Safety building.
