PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 26, 2009) – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) recently named The Honorable Carol A. Mumford and Peter Hayes to its board of directors.

Ms. Mumford recently retired from the Rhode Island House of Representatives after 10 years of service, which included membership on the House Finance Committee and its Health and Human Services Subcommittee. Prior to that, Ms. Mumford spent more than 30 years as an educator, which included positions as an English teacher in the Barrington school system, Chair of the English Department at Scituate High School, and Adjunct Professor at Rhode Island College.

Among her current associations, Ms. Mumford is Rhode Island Republican National Committeewoman and a member of the Rhode Island Commission on Women. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Rhode Island College, and has completed studies for a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut.

Mr. Hayes is a partner and co-founder of Hayes & Sherry Real Estate Services, a commercial real estate brokerage company in Providence. Prior to co-founding his firm, Mr. Hayes served as vice president and regional manager of The Codman Company’s Providence office. His 25-year business career includes negotiating office, industrial, land, and retail sales and leases for some of the nation’s most prestigious companies, including AT&T, Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, General Electric, ITT and many others. A 1978 graduate of St. Lawrence University, Mr. Hayes is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Rhode Island Chamber of Business & Industry; an incorporator with The Providence Foundation; on the board of directors with the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council (RIPEC); an advisory board member for YearUp Providence; a member of the Rhode Island Commodores and a founding member of the Board of the Ross Elkhay Foundation.

Purcell, BCBSRI president and CEO. “Both Ms. Mumford and Mr. Hayes have decades-long experience in education, public service, and private industry. Each individual brings a unique perspective to BCBSRI that will no doubt help us further our goals.”

Commenting on their new appointments, both Ms. Mumford and Mr. Hayes expressed an enthusiasm and eagerness to begin serving on BCBSRI’s board.

“Whether in the classroom or on the House floor, my goal has always been to help better the lives of Rhode Islanders,” said Ms. Mumford. “Even though I am retired from public life, I still feel a duty to continue to help my fellow citizens, and hope to do so serving on the board of BCBSRI.”

Added Mr. Hayes, “These are difficult times, and healthcare tops everyone’s agenda. By serving on the board of BCBSRI, I look forward to contributing to BCBSRI’s efforts to improve the quality of life of its members and the people of Rhode Island by improving their health.”
