Program to provide toys, games, hats and mittens to children in need

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – November 2, 2008 — Today, the Children’s Holiday Hope Fund begins its fourth holiday-giving campaign and asks the public to make monetary donations toward hats and mittens for Rhode Island children-in-need.

The fund, established in 2005 as a collaboration between The Providence Journal Santa Fund and Pawtucket-based Hasbro, Inc.’s Children’s Giving Tree program, provides Hasbro games and toys as well as hats and mittens to local children, ages one through 12 who are under the services of the Rhode Island Department of Human Services (RIDHS) and Rhode Island Department of Children Youth & Families. The local U.S. Marine Corp. Toys for Tots program joins this year’s campaign and will deliver the toys and games as well as the hats and mittens to participating RIDHS agencies for distribution.

“Once again, the Journal will reserve space in paper and online to solicit and to publish the public’s monetary donations,” said Howard G. Sutton, chairman of the board, president, publisher and chief executive officer of The Providence Journal. “I continue to be amazed, every year, by the generous contributions from schools, community groups and individuals.”

“We all know that this year will be financially difficult for so many more families,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s president and chief executive officer. “That’s why we are happy to partner with The Providence Journal again this year, in the spirit of giving this holiday season, to provide warmth and joy to Rhode Island’s children in need.”

The public can make monetary contributions to the Children’s Holiday Hope Fund by sending a check or money order, payable to the Children’s Holiday Hope Fund, to The Providence Journal, c/o the Children’s Holiday Hope Fund, Providence, Rhode Island 02902. Donations qualify as contributions to a 501(c)3 organization. On Thursdays, The Providence Journal will publish recent contributions in paper and online at projo.com/giving.
