PROVIDENCE, RI — Providence Journal Staff Writer Edward R. Fitzpatrick of Providence has been named the new political columnist for The Providence Journal and projo.com.
“Ed will bring to this assignment a great understanding of the political landscape in Rhode Island. He is a respected journalist with a great eye for news, and an understanding of how the blogosphere is an important factor in the realm of politics,” said Thomas E. Heslin, interim executive editor at The Providence Journal. “This is a challenging and exciting era for media and politics, and Ed Fitzpatrick is going to make his mark,” added Heslin.
Fitzpatrick, who has 20 years of experience as a reporter and editor at daily newspapers, joined The Providence Journal Company in 2000. He most recently covered the state and federal courts in Rhode Island. Before joining the Journal, he was a reporter at The Hartford (Conn.) Courant and the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union and was city editor of The Saratogian in Sarasota Springs, N.Y. Fitzpatrick also covered city hall for the The Daily Gazette in Schenectady, N.Y. and was a reporter for The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y.

Fitzpatrick holds a dual Bachelor of Science Degree in political science and magazine journalism from Syracuse University where he was awarded the Wolseley Award for magazine journalism.
