West Warwick, RI: Military families and the general public will join local officials and Cox Communications to honor the contributions of our veterans with a special screening of “Coast Guard Alaska,” Nov. 6. The new series from The Weather Channel, produced by Al Roker Entertainment, highlights the day-to-day trials, tribulations and victories of the Coast Guard Alaska team.

The show will be featured on the big screen at the Jane Pickens Theater Sunday in honor of Veterans Day, offering local families a sneak peak at the compelling new series. The screening, which is free and open to the public, will begin with a short speaking program at 1:30 p.m.

“Veterans Day offers our nation a time to pause and thank our veterans for their courage and their true dedication to our nation. These men and women have fought and continue to fight for our protection and our freedom, risking their lives and saving others,” Cox Senior Vice President and General Manager Paul Cronin said. “The premiere of this show offered Cox the opportunity to bring together local military officers, the general public and government officials to witness the extraordinary bravery it takes to serve. We are thrilled to invite all Rhode Islanders to join in this celebration and sneak peak at a theater established in 1919, just after the first World War.”

The series will premiere on The Weather Channel Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 9 p.m. ET (Cox channel 52; HD channel 1052) and feature seven 60-minute episodes. The Weather Channel’s release on the series notes, “‘Coast Guard Alaska’ follows a team of Coast Guard swimmers and rescue pilots stationed in Kodiak, Alaska. Set against the awe-inspiring beauty of Kodiak’s majestic peaks and rolling mountains, along with the harsh oceans and treacherous terrain, the series shows us life for these brave men and women as they balance duty versus family, and how each one deals with the pressures associated with the job.

From intense training to perilous rescue missions in icy waters, the show reveals the strategy implemented in saving lives in such a harsh environment, along with the teamwork and discipline associated with the job. The series will also explore what life is like off-duty on the base, in a world so dependent on weather conditions. We’ll follow the group as they enjoy nature’s best offerings, from fishing trips on beautiful rivers to bear watching or barbecues with friends, family and colleagues.”

Speaking about the show, Al Roker said, “We just celebrated the second year of ‘Wake Up with Al’ on The Weather Channel, so this was my anniversary gift to the network. In all seriousness, ‘Coast Guard Alaska’ is a compelling series and one we feel will captivate The Weather Channel audience. We feel privileged that the Coast Guard has allowed us this inside look at their awe-inspiring daily lives.”
