PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 27, 2009) – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) announced today that Michael V. D’Ambra was elected to its board of directors.
Mr. D’Ambra is president of D’Ambra Construction Company, Inc., serving in that capacity for the past 39 years. As a leading builder for the State of Rhode Island, his Warwick-based company has installed utilities, built major roads, and constructed recreation parks, residential subdivisions, commercial and industrial facilities, and government installations.
“We are excited to welcome Mr. D’Ambra to our board of directors,” said James E. Purcell, BCBSRI President and CEO. “As the owner and founder of a successful Rhode Island business, he brings a valuable perspective to our organization. I am eager to tap his expertise and hear his ideas for addressing the healthcare needs of our customers.”
Among his current associations, Mr. D’Ambra serves on the board of directors of Bishop Hendricken High School and the Construction Industries of Rhode Island, and is an officer for the Rhode Island Laborers Pension Fund. A graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. D’Ambra is also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Aurora Civic Association.
“I look forward to joining the board of BCBSRI, as it is another way for me to give back to the State and gain an even greater understanding of its healthcare system,” said Mr. D’Ambra. “I hope my experience as a business owner is beneficial to the various efforts BCBSRI has in place now and in the future to improve the health of every Rhode Islander.”
Under provisions of the Health Care Reform Act of 2004, BCBSRI is required to have two gubernatorial appointees serving on its board. Mr. D’Ambra now joins The Honorable Carol A. Mumford in this capacity. Ms. Mumford was appointed to the BCBSRI board by Governor Carcieri in March.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is the state’s leading health insurer and now covers more than 600,000 members. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
