PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Thursday March 8, 2012 – The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation was recently granted 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. Esophageal adenocarcinoma is the fastest growing cancer in the western world and while almost all cases of esophageal cancer are fatal, survivors often suffer a lower quality of life after surgery. Established in Rhode Island on November 21, 2011, Salgi’s mission is to raise awareness, encourage early detection and support research in hopes of a cure for esophageal cancer.
The foundation is in memory of Salvatore Molfesi, the founders’ family member, who lost his courageous battle with esophageal cancer in 1998. President Linda Molfesi, daughter of Mr. Molfesi said: “My family and I suffered through an obvious tumultuous and heartbreaking ordeal as countless other families of cancer victims have. However, when my father was diagnosed, this type of cancer was unheard of at the time by our family.” Molfesi continued, “We were not only losing him, but we had no understanding of this type of cancer and were terrified and vulnerable as to what it was or if it could have been prevented.”
The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation believes in education, awareness, early detection, screening and advanced research to promote esophageal health and the treatment and prevention of esophageal cancer. For more information or to donate, please visit www.salgi.org.
