June 2, 2012, Newport, RI – Over $198,000 was raised last weekend in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Leukemia Cup Regatta to help fund research to find better therapies and help improve the lives of patients and their families.

The New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI, was the setting for this fundraising Regatta as 60 boats geared up for what was to be a wild day on the waters! Rain, wind and unforeseen circumstances made this regatta one to remember.

“It means so much to me that these sailors are out there raising money and awareness to give help and hope to people like Maya,” said 2012 Honored Skipper and current blood cancer patient, Maya Spadano’s mother, Sherri Spadano. “And they get to do something they enjoy while they’re making a difference in the lives of others like Maya.”

The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a thrilling series of sailing events that combines the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to fight leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. Participants have raised more than $38 million to help advance the LLS mission since the inception of the Leukemia Cup Regatta.

Each sailor in the Regatta series is eligible to win prizes including the opportunity to race at the Fantasy Sail on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans on December 7-9, 2012, with world-renowned sailor and ESPN commentator Gary Jobson, national Regatta chairman. Our own Scotty Murray, raising over $19,000 alone, will be joining many others in this amazing experience.

“The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a great way for these boat enthusiasts to do what they love while also helping the more than one million people in North America diagnosed with a blood cancer who need our help,” said Bill Koconis, LLS Executive Director for the Rhode Island Chapter.
