(Providence-RI) Veteran news anchor and journalist Andrew Gobeil is joining WLNE-TV / ABC6 in Providence. Beginning Wednesday October 21st, Andrew will be joining Doreen Scanlon weekday mornings between five and eight to co-anchor Good Morning Providence. The announcement was made today in Providence by WLNE-TV Vice President and General Manager Steve Doerr.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work for the station I grew up watching as a child,” Gobeil said. “Doreen is a pro, I look forward to joining her at the desk weekday mornings to inform and entertain our viewers. It’s going to be a fun show to work on, and to watch.”

The Southern New England native is a graduate of Fitchburg State College.

A seasoned anchor and reporter, his wide range of experience includes time at stations in Las Vegas, Greenville, and Mobile. Gobeil also served as Managing Editor for South Carolina Educational TV and as Chief National Correspondent for the Meredith Broadcast Group’s Washington DC bureau.

“Andy’s journalistic experience, anchoring and reporting skills, and his knowledge of New England make him an outstanding choice for this critical position in our news department,” according to ABC6 News Director BJ Finnell. “His addition to Good Morning Providence team will help us further improve and refine our morning programming.”

Gobeil is looking forward to returning to the place he calls home. “My career took me across the country, but Southern New England has always been home. My family would celebrate Christmas in New Bedford, we’d fish with my uncle in the waters off Fairhaven, my first roller coaster ride was at Lincoln Park, I can’t begin to tell you how many times we’ve visited the Whaling Museum, and every single time we’d drive by, Dad would never fail to point out the theater where Moby Dick premiered”
His passion for news began in preschool. After a librarian dropped off broadcast equipment, he grabbed the microphone to interview his classmates about the Red Sox. As a teenager, Gobeil honed his skills by watching his father at work at WQRC in Hyannis. It was there that his interest in local and state politics took shape.
Gobeil is also an accomplished author penning two books, one a thriller, and the other a non-fiction look at local television coverage of the civil rights era.

One person who cannot wait for Gobeil to begin is his aunt, Janice Coelho. The Fairhaven resident has followed her nephew’s career for years, “But I’ve never been able to see him on the air,” she says. “I’d have friends call and tell me they saw him doing the news in Washington, or Las Vegas or Atlanta. Now, I can turn on ABC 6 and see him. It’s exciting. I am so proud of what he’s done with his career, and the thought that he’s come home is great.”
