Providence, RI (December 14, 2010) – The 4th Annual WestSide Holiday Caroling event will take place this Sunday, December 18th from 6-8pm. Carolers will stroll through the historic Armory District of Providence, bringing warmth and joy to the WestSide neighborhood during the coldest time of the year. ALL ARE WELCOME to participate, regardless of any religious or non-religious beliefs.

“We began this event four years ago simply as a way to spread some holiday joy to our neighbors,” said event organizer Elaine Collins. “The economy was bad; people were losing their jobs, the wars were going on, and the political climate was very negative at the time. People were just feeling down. This tradition is a wonderful way to give something meaningful away for free; something that costs nothing to give, but a gift that is worth so much to people at this time of year.”

Last year, nearly 100 people from diverse religions and cultural backgrounds strolled and sang together. Many were neighbors with friends and relatives, but many came from outside the neighborhood (some from Massachusetts) wanting to be a part of this fun, family-friendly event. In addition to the Christmas standards, WestSide Carolers will sing songs to celebrate the upcoming Chanukah season, and also a few songs in Spanish (song books with lyrics and pronunciations provided!)

Don’t worry if your voice isn’t strong, or if you can’t carry a tune – everyone is encouraged to join, and there will be many strong singers present to offset the shy or the off-key.

As in the past, WestSide Carolers are pleased to carol in the snow and cold, but won’t venture out in rain. A rainy Sunday night will keep the group indoors at Loie Fuller’s for drinks and songs around the fireplace. Either way, there will be much fun and merrymaking!
