PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island fell another five cents this week, “continuing a six-week decline that has seen prices fall an average of 42 cents per gallon,” AAA Southern New England said today in its weekly fuel-price report.

AAA’s Aug. 18 survey found the average self-service price for unleaded gasoline at Ocean State stations was $3.689 per gallon, down 5 cents from the survey a week ago and 42 cents from its July 7 average of $4.109 per gallon. However, the price remains 55 cents above the local price at the beginning of the year and 92 cents higher than at this time a year ago, when regular self-serve was $2.769 per gallon.

The nationwide average of self-serve regular retreated 4 cents to $3.74, 36 cents below the average price in the week ended July 7.

Meanwhile, the price range for self-serve regular at local stations narrowed to 29 cents, from a low of $3.569 to a high of $3.859. Similar ranges were seen for other grades of gasoline, which had average-self serve prices of $3.819 for midgrade unleaded (down 6 cents over the past week); $3.939 for premium (down 7 cents) and $4.569 for diesel (down 11 cents).
