PROVIDENCE – Collection of the 1 percent hotel tax in Rhode Island totaled $748,596 in July, a 0.5 percent decline year over year from the year prior, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue Wednesday.
Collection from hotels, the consistent majority source of the tax, totaled $595,562, a 0.9 percent year-over-year increase. Room resellers and hosting platforms totaled $26,000, compared with $22,832 in July 2017. Realtors and homeowners accounted for $128,035 in July, a $12,383 year-over-year decline from the year before.
As July is the first month of the fiscal year, the fiscal year-to-date figures are the same as the above data.
Newport accounted for the largest collection of local 1 percent hotel tax at $192,318. The city also accounted for the largest nominal decline year over year in July, decreasing $23,070 from $215,387 the year prior.
Providence accounted for the second largest collection of any municipality in the state at $110,954, a negligible decline of 0.3 percent from the previous year.
