PROVIDENCE – Construction has begun on a mixed-use development adjacent to the historic Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Federal Hill.

The project, some of which remains under review by city agencies, includes two apartment buildings on Spruce Street, behind the church, as well as apartments over retail on Dean Street.

The project developer is The Omni Group, based in Providence, which has taken an active role in the area’s redevelopment.

The historic church, now owned by the development company, will remain and will be repurposed. That project has not been presented to the city.

City agencies have authorized construction of two new apartment buildings, each containing 24 units, on the space once occupied by the rectory and a parking lot.

The city’s Historic District Commission in September 2018 approved the razing of the rectory building, according to a spokesman for the city planning department.

Two other buildings are proposed for 110 Dean St. and 128 Dean St., which would have nine apartments over street-level retail. The city has not yet reviewed those proposals, the spokesman said.
