25 R.I. students win $50k in scholarships

STATE HOUSE – Twenty-five students from across Rhode Island are to be honored tonight as recipients of the R.I. Student Loan Authority’s fourth annual Rep. Paul V. Sherlock Memorial Scholarships.

The scholarships – totaling $50,000 – were awarded randomly to qualified applicants. Each must have recently graduated from a Rhode Island high school or approved home-schooling program, or have recently received a GED, and each must be enrolled as a full-time college student for the upcoming academic year.

Sherlock, who died in 2004 at the age of 73, was a state representative and chairman of the House Finance Committee, a professor of education at Rhode Island College and an 18-year RISLA board member. His memory also is honored with RIC’s Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities, a tribute to his years of advocacy on behalf of those with mental illness or developmental learning disorders.

The awards ceremony tonight at 6, in the State Room of the R.I. State House, will be attended by members of the Sherlock family, as well as by the scholarship recipients and their families. It will feature remarks by R.I. General Treasurer Frank Caprio, RISLA Executive Director Noel Simpson and Rep. Steven Costantino, D-Providence.
