3 health clinics achieve Blue Cross LGBTQ Safe Zone designation

PROVIDENCE – Three city health care providers were recently named as LGBTQ Safe Zones by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island.

The clinics join more than 20 other Rhode Island providers that have earned the designation from Blue Cross since 2016.

The newly designated facilities are East Coast Mental Wellness in Providence and Providence Community Health Centers Inc. locations Randall Square Health Center and Chafee Health Center.

Safe Zone certification includes staff training specific to the care of LGBTQ patients, protection for patients and staff from discrimination based on gender identity or expression, gender-neutral bathrooms, and inclusive forms and procedures.

“Continuing to grow and foster BCBSRI’s LGBTQ Safe Zone program is critical to ensuring availability of care for the LGBTQ community, which sadly continues to be a very underserved population with many unmet health care needs,” said Guillaume Bagal, head of diversity and inclusion at Blue Cross. “Seeing the Safe Zone logo when you enter a health care practice provides a visual reminder to patients that these are inclusive and affirming environments where all are welcome.”
