3 R.I. elementary schools designated National Blue Ribbon Schools

PROVIDENCE – Three local elementary schools are among the 362 public and private schools that have been designated National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

Ashaway Elementary School in Hopkinton, Brown Avenue Elementary School in Johnston and Flora S. Curtis Memorial School in Pawtucket were recognized by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps, according to a news release announcing the Blue Ribbon winners. Nationwide, public and private elementary, middle and high schools, including charter and magnet schools, are eligible for the honor.

No schools in Bristol County, Mass., were named to the list.

The department will formally recognize the 312 public schools and 50 private schools at an awards ceremony at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Oxon Hill, Md., on Nov. 14 and 15. Winning schools can fly a National Blue Ribbon Schools flag outside the school.

“We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives,” DeVos said in a video message to the honorees. “As a National Blue Ribbon School, your school demonstrates what is possible when committed educators hold all students and staff to high standards and create vibrant, innovative cultures of teaching and learning.”
