NEWPORT – Four hotels in the city were awarded prestigious Key awards from The MICHELIN Guide’s second U.S. hotel rankings. Both the Castle Inn and Resort and The Chanler at Cliff Walk earned two Keys each and The Cliffside Inn and The Vanderbilt earned one Key each in the MICHELIN Guide's additions that came out Sept. 12. Two Keys mark exceptional stay and one Key signifies very special stay. Three Keys, the highest distinction, means extraordinary stay. Debuting in the 2014, the Keys are the top of MICHELIN’s hotel ratings, just like its stars for restaurants. MICHELIN’S annual guide rates more than 5,000 properties across the globe. This year, the U.S. has 16 three Key hotels, 70 two Key hotels and 207 one Key hotels. “These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting,” the guide said. Previously, the guide only featured hotels from select locations. This is the second year U.S. hotels were included. In awarding it two Keys, the MICHELIN guide touted the Castle Inn at 590 Ocean Drive “between the quirky charm of a family-owned bed and breakfast and the smooth polish of a modern luxury hotel, incorporating elements of both. Fine food and top-notch service ensure that the experience is anything but rough, while the Northeastern nautical atmosphere contributes an air of romance that the dull corporate hotels can’t hope to match.” Also awarded two Keys, the MICHELIN guide described The Chanler at Cliff Walk 117 Memorial Blvd. as “Not content with a single style, its rooms and villas range across historical periods from Tudor to Georgian and back to the Renaissance. Fireplaces are universal, Jacuzzis nearly so, and some of the views are nothing short of astonishing. Two restaurants, the fine-dining Cara and the slightly more casual Café, gather hotel guests and Newport locals for impressive Mediterranean-accented New England coastal fare.” In earning one Key, the MICHELIN guide hailed the rooms at The Cliffside Inn 2 Seaview Ave. “Every room is different, though all are comparable in style after an extensive 2019 renovation, with eclectic Victorian-meets-contemporary interiors, stylish modern bathrooms, and luxe touches like gas fireplaces and Lather bath products,” the guide stated. “The rooms in the original house and the carriage house are perhaps a touch more authentic than the newer Cottage Suites, but the latter are notable for their extra space and their extra measure of seclusion.” The rooms at the The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection 41 Mary St. also earned the MICHELIN Guide’s praise in garnering one Key. Often historic hotels suffer from smallish rooms, but this is a problem the Vanderbilt does not have. They start out big and only get bigger; some suites come with kitchens, others span two floors,” the guide said. “And somehow there’s still room left over for a spa, a pair of pools, a fitness center and a number of social spaces – a billiards room, a bar, a garden terrace and Muse by Jonathan Cartwright, a restaurant helmed by one of New England’s most decorated chefs. Sounds rather as you’d expect from a 21st-century Vanderbilt Hall –which is, in our book, what authenticity means.” The full guide can be found here.
