NEWPORT – Forty-seven employees of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport have won 2019 Warfare Center Awards for their work in 2018.
Excellence was recognized in six areas, according to a news release: talent management, collaboration, innovation, knowledge sharing, technical support services, and information security – a new category of recognition this year.

In the area of collaboration, Division Newport personnel placed on four of eight winning teams, showing excellence in areas such as developing advanced power and energy technologies and initiatives critical to combat capabilities. All were done in collaboration with other divisions. Another project, a collaboration with the NAVAIR program office, NSWC Dahlgren Division, Lockheed Martin Manassas and the U.K. Ministry of Defence, for example, saved more than $30 million using software virtualization in U.K. submarines.
Rebecca Chhim of NUWC Newport won the information security award for developing the Risk Management Framework Tool used by Naval Sea Systems Command.
In the knowledge-sharing category, the Research Commons Team was led by Division Newport’s Elizabeth Peimer. The team developed a web portal for research tools and information, increasing opportunity for research collaboration, according to NUWC.
Another winner in the knowledge-sharing category is the People’s Integrated Essential Resource Team, which includes Division Newport employees Jason Benda and Nicolina Kelly.
“The team developed and launched the PIER website, providing a repository of links to pertinent information for all NAVSEA employees on iNFUSION, an internal NAVSEA information-sharing platform, and contains information for employees during their entire career life cycle – from onboarding to retirement,” according to the news release.
Division Newport’s Operation Steadfast Team won in the technical support services category. The team devised a round-the-clock, real-time fleet reach-back process to help with operational issues, costs and time saved in a strike operation.
The Division Newport winners will receive their awards at a future ceremony.
Part of NAVSEA, NUWC Division Newport is the oldest warfare center in the U.S. It marks its 150th anniversary this year.
