6 local colleges and universities make top 250 in 2020 WSJ rankings

PROVIDENCE – Four Rhode Island colleges and universities and two Bristol County, Mass., institutions ranked in the top 250 schools for 2020, as determined by the Wall Street Journal and the Times Higher Education in the organizations’ rankings released this week.

For the rankings more than 800 schools were graded on metrics related to outcomes, resources, engagement, environment and value.

This year, Harvard University ranked No.1, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale.

Top 250:

Brown University, in Providence, ranked No. 7 overall for the year, one spot below the school’s ranking one year prior. Brown ranked No. 15 overall for outcomes, No. 5 for resources, No. 16 for engagement, No. 118 for environment and the No. 63 best value in the country. The report said that Brown’s average net price was $25,651.

The report’s average net price for schools reflect the published cost of attendance (including tuition, required fees, expenses, and room and board) minus the average total grant and scholarship aid received from government sources and the institution, according to the Journal.

Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence, ranked No. 139 this year, the second-highest ranked school in Rhode Island. One year prior the school ranked No. 87 overall. The school ranked No. 160 for outcomes, No. 113 for resources, worse than No. 600 for engagement, No. 252 for environment and No. 237 for best value. Average net price was $39,777.

Wheaton College, in Norton, ranked No. 133 this year, ranking No. 216 for outcomes, No. 101 for resources, No. 285 for engagement, No. 321 for environment and No. 175 for best value. Average net price was $31,814. Wheaton ranked No. 106 overall one year prior.

Bryant University, in Smithfield, ranked No. 208 overall, placing No. 147 for outcomes, No. 331 for resources, No. 332 for engagement, between No. 500 and No. 600 for environment and No. 224 for best value. Average net price was $34,663. Bryant ranked No. 183 for 2019.

Stonehill College, in Easton, ranked No. 221 overall for 2020, placing at No. 157 for outcomes, No. 242 for resources, between No. 401 and No. 550 for engagement and worse than No. 600 for environment. The school ranked No. 220 for best value. Average net price was $33,583. Stonehill ranked No. 192 for 2019.

Providence College, in Providence, ranked No. 229 overall in 2019. The school ranked No. 187 for outcomes, No. 275 for resources, No. 179 for engagement, worse than No. 600 for environment and No. 238 for best value. Average net cost was $36,099. Providence College ranked No. 200 for 2019.

There were only 249 schools considered for top value for 2020.

Other local schools’ rankings:

University of Rhode Island, in South Kingstown, ranked between No. 401 and No. 500 this year. URI ranked No. 285 for outcomes, No. 501-600 for resources, No. 285 for engagement and between Nos. 501 and 600 for environment. The school was not ranked on best value. Average net price was $18,739. URI ranked No. 447 one year prior.

Roger Williams University, in Bristol, ranked between No. 401 and No. 500 this year. Outcomes also ranked between No. 401 and No, 500. Resources ranked No. 354, engagement ranked No. 285, environment ranked worse than No. 600 and average net price was $36,862. Roger Williams ranked No. 332 for 2019.

Salve Regina University, in Newport, ranked between No. 401 and 500, ranking No. 285 for outcomes, and between No. 401 and No. 500 for resources and engagement. The school ranked worse than No. 600 for environment. Average net price was $33,997. Salve ranked No. 390 for 2019.

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, in Dartmouth, ranked between No. 501 and No. 600 this year. Outcomes ranked lower than No. 600, resources ranked between No. 401 and No. 500. Engagement was ranked below No. 600 while environment ranked No. 215. Average net price was $18,184. Umass Dartmouth ranked between No. 601 and No. 800 one year prior.

Johnson & Wales University-Providence ranked worse than No. 600 overall this year, with the same ranking for outcomes, resources, and engagement. The school ranked No. 293 for environment. Average net price was $27,165. JWU ranked between No. 601 and No. 800 one year prior.

Rhode Island College, in Providence, was ranked below No. 600 this year, with the same ranking for both outcomes and resources. The school ranked No. 111 for engagement and No. 293 for environment. Average net cost was $9,008. RIC ranked between No. 601 and No. 800 one year prior.
