6 R.I. towns and school districts join energy savings program

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Office of Energy Resources has partnered with three municipalities and three school districts to aid them in efforts to conserve energy and reduce energy costs, the OER announced Wednesday.

The multiyear pilot effort, called Achieving Community Efficiency Program, will engage municipalities and school districts with a shared energy manager that will provide technical assistance and resources to help them track energy usage, energy reduction goals and identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements.

The six participants will be the towns of North Providence, South Kingstown and Warren and the public school systems of Barrington, North Providence and Scituate.

The program, launched in the spring of this year, is led by OER and the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships.

“Local municipalities and school districts often face unique energy challenges with limited staff resources and access to clean energy information,” said R.I. State Energy Commissioner Carol Grant. “We hope to take what we learn from this pilot and replicate this model across even more Rhode Island communities and partner energy offices around the country.”

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program.
