64th house construction marks World Habitat Day

FLORENCE — Today was just another work day for Sam Mansell, who didn’t realized it was also World Habitat Day for the Habitat for Humanity organization.

“I guess we just get so wrapped up in what we’re doing, and planning what we have to do next that we don’t even realize such things,” said Mansell, longtime construction manager for the Shoals chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

The nonprofit organization is in the completion stages of its 64th home, this one located at 2246 Houston Street in Florence.

Busy overseeing plumbing and the installation of the sewer system for the three bedroom, 1 1/2 bath home, Mansell said that once again, the house represents hope for a family that might never have had the opportunity to live in a new home.

“This home is for a mother and her two children and it’s just about ready to go,” he said. “We set a Nov. 15 completion date, but it will be ready before then.”

The home that will be turned over to Angela Newport marks the fourth and final house Habitat will build this year. The next home is scheduled for ground breaking in February.
