PROVIDENCE – Seven Rhode Island hospitals were recognized among the list of 2022 “best hospitals and surgery centers for billing ethics” compiled by Money and the Leapfrog Group to recognize hospitals “most likely to play fair with your bill’: Kent Hospital, Landmark Medical Center, Newport Hospital, South County Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Westerly Hospital and Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island.

In partnership with Money, Leapfrog Group compiled the list using data from its 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Survey and 2022 Leapfrog Ambulatory Surgery Center Survey. In total, 565 hospitals and 10 surgical centers across the nation made the list.

Hospitals that carried an A or B letter grade on the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assessment for fall 2022 qualified. They were also required to meet certain standards of billing ethics: the hospital must provide every patient with a billing statement and/or master itemized bill within 30 days of final claims adjudication; provide patients instructions for contacting a billing representative to assist with payment plans and reviews; Refusal to take legal action against patients for late or insufficient payment of a medical bill; and the surgery center provides either payer-specific negotiated charges or cash prices on their website for commonly performed procedures.
