Learn MoreThe website, OceanStateCurrent.com, could launch as soon as next Tuesday, CEO Mike Stenhouse said. The center says it is nonpartisan but has a mission “to restore competitiveness to Rhode Island through the advancement of market-based reform solutions.”
When asked by PBN if the content would be conservative-leaning, Stenhouse said:
“It would take the same flavor [as the center] … completely nonpartisan, completely fact-based … but it’s not unthinkable that a little bit of the [conservative] perspective that would flow down to the Current – but objective, of course!”
The first member on staff is Justin Katz, who founded the blog AnchorRising.com. Katz left his job as a carpenter to take on the role of managing editor at the Current. The site is considering using freelancers or part-time employees as needed.
Katz said that, in addition to his blog, he has been writing essays, along the Op-Ed line, for the past decade.
“I’m very comfortable with the practices of researching numbers, demographics and also calling people and getting the facts on stories,” he noted.
Katz said that they plan on covering all news in Rhode Island, focusing on matters related to government.
In a news release, the nonprofit center said some of the issues likely to be covered are: Capitol Hill legislation, state budget and spending, education reform, and human interest and other public policy stories.
