Dice survey: Tech salaries flat

NEW YORK – Technology professionals saw virtually no increase in their salaries for the second year in a row, according to the 2010-2011 Annual Salary Survey released by career site Dice on Jan. 19.

Tech workers, on average, saw a salary increase of 0.7 percent to $79,384 in 2010, from $78,845 a year earlier.

Nearly four out of 10 technology professionals said they expect they could make more money if they changed employers in 2011.

Nevertheless, 50 percent of tech professionals expressed they were “somewhat” or “very satisfied” with their pay, up slightly from 46 percent a year earlier.

“Companies can no longer get away with paltry salary increases for their technology staffs based on the demand we are seeing for talent,” said Tom Silver, senior vice president of North America for Dice.
“Retention is the key to driving additional contributions to the business from technology staffs. Employers that are reluctant to increase compensation or step-up retention efforts will likely pay for their unsatisfactory ways,” he said.

The most popular skill sets for technology professions, according to an analysis of job postings on Dice, were Oracle, J2EE/Java and C, C++ and C#.
Technology professionals with experience in Oracle Database earned an average salary of $90,914, while Oracle Application Server-certified professionals earned $88,063. Professionals proficient in J2EE/Java earned on average $91,060, while programmers in the C language earned between $85,500 and $90,350, on average.

Dice’s results were based on a survey of 19,798 employed technology professionals conducted between Aug. 31 and Nov. 15.
