Tech expo for high school girls slated at URI

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – GGRL Tech, an interactive technology expo for female high school students, will kick off Thursday at the University of Rhode Island from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Now in its 15th year, GGRL Tech will welcome 549 high school girls and 62 educators to the event, which will feature opening remarks from keynote speaker Kim Kowal Arcand, visualization lead for NASA’s Cambridge-based Chandra X-ray Observatory.
There also will be 31 workshops for students which will focus on STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] fields ranging from bioscience, animal science and oceanography to engineering, physics and computer science.
A total of 34 high schools and career and technical centers will be represented:

Tech Collective, Rhode Island’s industry association for information technology and bioscience, is presenting the expo. Atrion Networking Corp., IBM, EpiVax Inc., Dassault Systemes, Amica Mutual Insurance Co. and the Governor’s Workforce Board Rhode Island are sponsors.

URI also will present scholarships at the end of the expo.
